Plastic surgeons often get patients who come in to improve the appearance of their breasts. While some people may only require implants, some may also require a lift to adjust their skin and raise the position of the nipple over the breast mound. Not everyone will require this, but there are some who may request it.
There are a few factors that may indicate to your surgeon whether you will need a lift in addition to your breast augmentation surgery.
Will You Need a Breast Lift, Too?
While you may want larger and perkier breasts, there are some personal attributes that may decide whether both procedures are needed.
Ask yourself about the quality of your breast skin. Does it have a reasonable amount of elasticity? If not, an appropriately sized implant will probably not help you achieve a good result. If you have too much extra skin or you have an average amount of skin with low elasticity, a lift will help tighten the skin envelope so that the breast itself can achieve the shape and perkiness you desire.
Another factor is the position of your nipples. Are they at or below the level of your breast fold? When a nipple rests too low, an implant alone can make your breasts appear as if they’re sagging even more. Not to mention the additional weight will cause your breasts to look as if the tissue is “falling off.”
Your surgeon will also measure the degree of symmetry with respect to your nipple position, but you can also do this on your own at home. If one nipple is much lower than the other, a lift can correct this unevenness and produce a more symmetrical result. Keep in mind, however, that most women, and men, have asymmetric nipples. However, this imbalance is often very minute and hardly noticeable. A small amount of asymmetry may actually be acceptable postsurgery, even by the most experienced surgeons.
If any of these factors pertain to your breasts, chances are that you will need a lift in addition to a breast augmentation. So, is it possible to perform the lift at the same time as the augmentation?
Most plastic surgeons can achieve a patient’s desired results using just implants. By adding a breast lift, the complexity of the procedure increases. This is why it’s incredibly important to know about your surgeon’s experience and areas of expertise. A board-certified plastic surgeon is more likely to provide you with the best results. Do your research when it comes to finding a proper plastic surgeon. Being as informed as possible helps you get the results you desire.
